Fridge Freezer buying guide

How to Choose the Right Fridge Freezer for Your UK Kitchen

A fridge freezer runs 24 hours a day, every day of the year — so choosing the right one affects your food, your kitchen space, and your energy bill for the next decade. Here’s how to get it right.

1. Measure your space first

Before anything else, measure the height, width, and depth of the gap — and leave around 25mm of clearance on each side and at the back for ventilation. Standard freestanding models are about 60cm wide; check the door can open fully too.

2. Choose the right capacity

  • 1–2 people: 200–250 litres total is usually plenty.
  • 3–4 people: 250–350 litres.
  • 5+ or batch cookers: 350 litres or more, or an American-style model.

Think about your fridge-to-freezer split too: a 70/30 split suits fresh-food shoppers, while 50/50 suits households that freeze a lot.

3. Check the energy label (A–G)

Every fridge freezer sold in the UK carries an energy label rated A to G. A higher rating costs a little more upfront but saves money every year — an efficient model can cost as little as £25–£40 a year to run, while an old, inefficient one can cost double.

4. Frost-free or manual defrost?

Frost-free freezers stop ice building up so you never have to defrost — convenient, but slightly higher running cost. Manual defrost models are cheaper to run but need defrosting once or twice a year.

5. Features worth paying for

  • Salad/humidity drawers to keep veg fresh for longer;
  • A fast-freeze function for batch cooking;
  • Reversible doors for flexible kitchen layouts;
  • A low noise rating (under 40dB) if your fridge sits in an open-plan space.
